Madison Police Department to begin leasing new squad cars

Dec. 17--MADISON -- The Police Department's vehicles are due to be replaced in the coming months and the chief has an idea about how to give the department more bang for its buck on its new cars.

Police Chief John Drumm plans to stagger the leasing of the cars so there is less financial impact on the town. The town previously purchased two or three cars every few years, but stopped a few years ago when all wore out at once.

"They all died at once and it would have been too many to buy so we started leasing them," said First Selectman Fillmore McPherson. "Instead of waiting to lease them all at the same time again (Drumm) wants to change to a staggered lease situation."

Drumm plans on leasing three cars this year and likely two per year in subsequent years.

"Otherwise it's like letting everything go on a house and fixing it all at once. You can't do that," said Drumm, who is planning on leasing this year's cars before the fiscal year ends so there won't be an effect on next year's budget. READ MORE
